The Best Prepaid Mobile International Voice & Text Deals

Making international calls on your prepaid phone can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. The big mobile operators charge the unwary a fortune for calls to non-US numbers, even to Canada and Mexico. Verizon and T-Mobile charge as much as $1.99/minute to calls to European and Asian countries. AT&T is a little better, but still costly with per minute surcharges as high as $1.09 to China or .89 to the Philippines.

Fortunately there are a number of prepaid mobile operators with much lower international rates.Prepaid Phone News has gone though dozens of prepaid provider’s international calling options to find the operators and plans that offer the least expensive international calling and messaging options .

This post is updated frequently as plans and pricing are constantly changing. Last Updated 4/20/2015: Cricket $50 and $60 plans now include unlimited calls to Canada.

Read on for my recommended prepaid operators and plans for international calling and texting.

Unlimited plans: If you make a lot of international calls, 500 minutes a month or more, an unlimited international plan can be a good deal. These plans are either stand alone plans that include unlimited domestic and international calls and texts or unlimited international add-ons to unlimited domestic plans. Either way, you will end up paying between $20 and $70 per month for unlimited domestic and international talk and text.

There are several things to watch out for with unlimited international plans:

  • They only cover calls to certain countries. Many sizable, but expensive to call, countries including the Philippines, El Salvador and Nigeria are usually not included.
  • For most covered countries only calls to landlines are included, not to mobile phones.
  • They may not be truly unlimited. I’ve seen a number of complaints from users who had their unlimited international plans shut off for using too many minutes. How many is too many? Your guess is as good as mine but I suspect more than 2000 minutes a month would be pushing the limit

In spite of these limitations, “unlimited” plans can be a good deal. Just be sure the plan you choose covers the phone numbers you want to call and don’t be surprised if you get cut off. If you do get your unlimited international plan canceled for overuse, please leave a comment so that other readers can get an idea of what the hidden limits are and which operators to avoid.

On all plans watch out for cumbersome access number dialing schemes. Several operators don’t let you dial international calls directly. Instead you have to dial a 3 to 11 digit access number, wait for a prompt and then dial the international number. It’s possible but tricky to automate the process by using a calling card app or by inserting pauses and waits in the address book dial strings, but I recommend choosing an operator that allows international direct dialing.

Here are my picks for the best deals in unlimited international prepaid plans. Click the operator name in the first column to see details of the plan.

Unlimited Domestic Prepaid Plans with low per minute international rates. If you already use an unlimited monthly plan for domestic calls and need less than 1000 international minutes per month, it can be less expensive to pay by the minute for international calls. Several operators let you add some extra funds to your account that you can use to make international calls for as a little as a penny per minute. Some even include some free international calls with their international add-ons.

Rates vary widely and no one operator offers the best rate to every country. To help you compare I’ve defined a prepaid market basket of five frequently called countries. It includes the three nations (Canada, Mexico and the UK) that send the most visitors to the US, plus the three countries (Mexico, China and the Philippines.) with the most foreign born US residents.

For each provider I’ve computed the average Market Basket Price per Minute for calls to mobile phonesin the five countries. Here are the best deals.

Pay as you go: For light users (under approximately 300 combined domestic and international minutes and texts per month) a pay as you go plan is usually the least expensive option. The best of these plans charge about 5¢ per domestic minute, 6¢ and up per international minute and 2¢ per domestic or international text. Here are the pay as you go plans with the best international rates.

Recommendations: I advising choosing based on price and which network (T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon or AT&T) works best for you. There are some especially good deals if you can use T-Mobile, including Ultra Mobile for the lowest priced unlimited plan, 1000 free international minutes, inexpensive international rates and $5 to $20 in free international call credit per month and Lycamobile for the lowest domestic and international pay as you go voice rates.

Text Only: If you mainly want to send international texts, Airvoice, AT&T, Expo, Ultra and Lycamobile include unlimited international text messaging with all monthly plans. On pay as you go, PTel is the best deal at 2¢ per international text.

The Details: here’s a bit more about each of the operators mentioned in the table above. The operators are listed alphabetically:

Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week Apr 12 – Apr 18

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News’ regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post showcasing the best current US prepaid phone deals.

My Deal of the week pick is the brand new, unlocked AT&T LG G2 D800 32GB LTE Android phone for $189.99 $229.99 from eBay seller qualitycellz (99.1% positive feedback) with free shipping.

The G2 sold for $599.99 when it launched in September 2013. Although it was released a year and a half ago its specs are still far better than anything else you can buy today for under $200. It has a 2.26 GHz Snapdragon™ 800 Quad-Core CPU, 2 GB of RAM. 5.2″ (1920 x 1080) Gorilla Glass screen,13 MP main camera with optical image stabilization, 2.1 MP front facing camera, NFC, IR blaster, WiFi a/b/g/n, 32 MB internal memory and a 3000 mAh battery good for up to 17 hours talk time.

The LG is rootable and has an active development comunity with many custom ROMs. It’s currently running KitKat with an official Lollpop upgrade expected soon. The D800 AT&T version of the G2 supports the GSM 850/900/1800/1900. UMTS 850/1900/2100 and LTE b2/b4/b5/b17 bands.

The Verizon version of the G2 is also on sale for $199.99 at BestBuy. There’s some uncertainty as to whether or not this is no-contract phone however. The Best Buy site lets you order it without a plan and some SlickDeals and HowardForums users believe it is contract-free. However the BestBuy site has some boilerplate text about an early termination fee that’s a bit off putting. If anyone buys the BestBuy G2 and tries activating on Page Plus, Straight Talk or TracFone please leave a comment as to whether it works or not.

Simple Mobile Cuts Unlimited Talk & Text, 10 GB Plan Price

TracFone’s Simple Mobile has reduced the price of its 10 GB Unlimited Nationwide plan from $60 to $55 per month. The plan includes unlimited domestic voice minutes and picture messaging, unlimited international and domestic text messaging and unlimited data. The first 10 GB of data per month is delivered at high speeds, including LTE where available. After 10 GB data speeds are throttled to 64 Kbps.

The price of Simple’s 10 GB Unlimited International plan was also reduced by $5, from $70 to $65 per month. It includes all the features of the 10 GB Unlimited Nationwide plan plus unlimited calls to up to 10 unique numbers in 51 countries (full list), including mobile phones in India, Hong Kong and China. The Simple Mobile website hasn’t been updated with the new pricing for the 10 GB international plan yet, but Simple Mobile dealers have been notified that the new lower price is effective immediately.

Simple Mobile operates as a T-Mobile MVNO using the T-Mobile native network only with no roaming. The price cuts are probably intended to make Simple’s 10 GB plans more competitive with T-Mobile owned MetroPCS’ $60 ($70 with international calling add-on) plan which includes unlimited unthrottled data, off network voice and text roaming and WiFi calling, all which Simple Mobile lacks. There are no changes to Simple Mobile’s other plans.

Leaked App Reveals New Details About Google’s Wireless MVNO

Thanks to a leaked app we now know a bit more about the mobile service that Google hasconfirmed it will launch this year. Cody Toombs at Android Police has written a detailed analysis of an app that was found in a leaked internal build of Android for the Nexus 6.

The app Tycho.apk, lets users manage theirProject Fi wireless account. Project Fi is likely a placeholder name for Google’s MVNO, which Toombs speculates will be called Google Wireless. Android Police is labeling the find as a rumor and cautions that although the app looks genuine, Google is very likely to make changes to its wireless service before launch.

Toombs extracted a number of text strings from the app that look like parts of the menus, prompts and alerts. These strings suggest that:

  • Google’s wireless service will be prepaid.
  • Users will pay an unspecified flat fee in advance for unlimited US voice calls and text.
  • International calls will be charged per minute, like they are with Google Voice
  • Customers will purchase data in advance in 1 GB increments and will receive a refund for unused data at the end of the month.
  • Overage data will be billed at the same price per GB as data purchased in advance.
  • Accounts with multiple lines sharing the same pool of data will be supported.
  • Data only plans may be available.
  • Interest free financing of Nexus 6 phones may be available
  • Customers will be able to activate the Google wireless service from within the app but only if their Google account has been authorized. I suspect that means the service will be invite only initially.
  • The service will automatically switch between using T-Mobile or Sprint depending on which service has the best signal. Customers will be able to disable auto switching and switch carriers manually.

This is just a quick summary, the Android Police article is very detailed. I recommend reading it if you are at all interested in Google’s forthcoming wireless service.

According to Google Product chief Sundar Pichai, Google’s wireless service will launch at small scale and is intended to spur innovation rather than to compete directly with the wireless operators. The service will probably only work with the Nexus 6 at launch. It’s expected to route voice, data and messaging over the best available connection whether its WiFi, T-Mobile or Sprint. Google is is expected to launch the service At Google I/O which will be held May 28 and 29. Like many of products Google launched at I/O in the past like Google Music and Google Glass, I suspect that Google Wireless will only available to Googe I/O attendees initially and then be offered on an invite only basis with prospective users able to request an invite online.

Cricket Galaxy S6 Launching April 24 For $649.99

AT&T’s Cricket Wireless has revealed pricing and availability for its version of the Samsung Galaxy S6. The Android flagship will be available at Cricket stores and cricketwireless.combeginning April 24 for $649.99. That’s the same price that Boost Mobile is charging for its S6, which has been available since April 10.

To ease the sticker shock slightly Cricket is offering a couple of easy payment plans. Customers with good credit can get the Galaxy S6 with 24 month financing and a $19.99 initial payment. There’s also a 90 days same-as-cash payment option with a $49.99 initial payment and no credit check. The payment plans are only available at Cricket stores, not online.

The S6 is decidedly high-end phone. It features a 5.1″ Quad HD Super AMOLED screen with 2560 x 1440 px resolution, an eight core 2.1 Ghz 64 bit processor, 3 GB RAM, 32GB of internal memory and 16 MP rear and 5 MP front facing cameras.

Unlike all previous Galaxy S models it doesn’t have a removable battery or a SD card slot. If those features are important to you, S5 prices are dropping. Or wait for LG’s soon to be released G4 which has both along with other specs equal or better than those of the S6.

Boost Mobile Offers Miami Customers Lower Cost Calls to Cuba

It looks like the recent normalization of relations between the US and Cuba might make calling Cuba more affordable.  Cuba has always been one of the more expensive countries to call. Most operators charge a dollar per minute or more. Even on carriers noted for low international rates, calls to Cuba are expensive. Ultra Mobile seems to be the cheapest at 49¢/minute. Prices from other low cost international stalwarts are higher: Lycamobile 68¢, PTel 88¢ and Google Voice 98¢.

Sprint’s Boost Mobile announced a lower cost alternative today. Called Cuba Monthly Connect, it includes unlimited domestic calls, unlimited global texting, 5 GB of high speed data and 15 minutes per month of calling to Cuba for $50/month. A $60 version of the plan increases the included high speed data to 10 GB with the same unlimited talk and text and 15 minutes of calls to Cuba. After 15 minutes calls to Cuba are charged at Boost’s regular 99¢/minute rate

Those 15 minutes of Cuban calling aren’t exactly free however. Cuba Monthly Connect Plans are $5 per month more expensive than Boost’s comparable Data Boost plans. That means that if you make exactly 15 minutes per month of calls to Cuba, you are paying 33¢/minute which is less than anyone else charges for Cuban calling.

There is another catch, Cuba Monthly Connect plans are a limited time promotion that’s only available at authorized Boost Mobile wireless dealers in the Miami, Florida area.

In addition to the Cuba Monthly Connect plans, until 5/31/15 new Miami area customers can get a free 4G LTE phone plus an additional free 25 minutes of Cuban calling during their first month of service if they port their number to Boost from any non-Sprint based carrier. Also, now through 5/31, current Boost Miami customers can add 50 minutes of Cuban calling and unlimited international texts for $15/month or 30 cents/minute they use all 50 minutes.

As part of the Cuba Monthly Connect promotion, Boost Mobile is also donating $10,000 to Roots of Hope, a nonprofit organization that provides technology training, cell phones and tablets to the youth of Cuba to help them build a better future for themselves.

Walmart Family Mobile Gives Users More Data

Walmart’s Family Mobile T-Mobile MVNO is adding 500 MB of high speed data to both of its plans:
  • $29.88/month – Unlimited Talk, Text & Data with up to 1GB of 4G LTE data (up from 500MB)
  • $39.88/month – Unlimited Talk, Text & Data with up to 3GB of 4G LTE data (up from 2.5GB)

After the 1 GB or 3 GB monthly high-speed data allotment is used unlimited data throttled to 2G speeds is available for the rest of the billing cycle.

The changes are effective tomorrow, April 18. All customers will automatically get the increased data with no action required on their part.

Walmart Family Mobile is a no-contract postpaid T-Mobile service that’s available exclusively at Walmart stores and online. In addition to T-Mobile native coverage, off network voice and SMS roaming is included at no extra charge. Payments can be made online or by phone using a credit or debit card or checking account or with cash in a Walmart store. Typical postpaid taxes and fees of between 10% and 35% are charged. There’s a $5/month Family Plan discount for each additional line (up to five lines total).

Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week Apr 19 – Apr 25

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News’ regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post showcasing the best current US prepaid phone deals.

My Deal of the week pick the TracFone Motorola Moto E Android phone from ShopCellDeals eBay store for $59.99, or $99.99 with 1200 minutes, 1200 texts and 1200 MB of data and one year of service. The regular prices of the phone and the airtime are $99.99 each.

The Moto E vies with the LG Ultimate 2 ($79.99 at ShopCellDeals) as TracFone’s best smartphone. The LG has a larger screen (4.5 vs 4.3 inches) but the Motorola’s screen is brighter and higher resolution (qHD vs WVGA). On the other hand, the Moto E lacks a removable battery, front facing camera and autofocus and a flash for the main camera, all of which the LG has.

Other Moto E specs include Android KitKat, a 1.2 Ghz dual core Snapdragon processor, 1 GB RAM, 4GB internal memory and a SD card slot supporting up to 32 GB cards.

The TracFone Moto E uses the Verizon 3G network. In addition to TracFone it will work on other Verizon MVNOs including Page Plus, Selectel and BYO.

Updated 4/24:

Cricket Adds Unlimited Canadian Calling to $50 and $60 Plans

AT&T’s Cricket Wireless has added unlimited calls and MMS to Canada to its $50 Smart and $60 Pro plans. All Canadian numbers are included with the exception of calls to the Canadian Northwest Territories. The same plans have included unlimited calling to landlines and mobile phones in Mexico since February.

Update 4/21/15: Users on the grandfathered 20 GB Advanced plan have discovered that it also includes unlimited Canadian calling and MMS.

The Smart and Pro plans also include unlimited domestic calls, texts and MMS as well as unlimited international texting to more than 35 countries. The only difference between the two plans is that the $50 plan comes with 5 GB of high speed data per month while the $60 plan includes 10 GB. High speed data on Cricket is throttled to 8 Mbps for LTE and 4 Mbps for HSPA+. After the high speed data is used up unlimited data throttled to 128 Kbps is available for the rest of the plan month.

In other Cricket news, the Cricket website was revamped over the week end. The update is apparently not complete yet. When current users attempt to upgrade to a new phone they are getting a message that upgrades are temporarily unavailable online and that they should go to a Cricket store to upgrade. The good news is that, according to a Howard Forums member who claims to be a Cricket dealer, upgrading customers can now purchase phones at the same discounted “with Activation” prices as new customers. However, upgrading customers are not eligible for mail in rebates and until upgrades are available online they will have to pay the $25 upgrade fee that most Cricket dealers charge.
